In couples where the woman is under age 35, medical professionals generally consider the couple infertile after twelve months of contraceptive-free intercourse without conception.
In couples where the woman is 35 or older, medical professionals generally consider the couple infertile after six months of contraceptive-free intercourse without conception.
Secondary infertility occurs when a couple has difficulty conceiving a second time (after a birth or a miscarriage).
